The benefits of omitting alcohol for a month (or longer…)

So you have committed to no alcohol for a month (maybe even longer?!) Here are all of the positives that are about to come!

1: Better quality sleep.

Suppose you’re a consistent drinker – after one week from your last glass. Your quality of sleep will begin to improve. When you drink, you typically fall into a deep sleep, missing the crucial REM sleep stage. When we are supposed to have between 6-7 cycles of REM sleep within one night, you typically only have one or two when you’re drinking!!! REM sleep can also affect your sleep from previous nights.

The benefits of better quality sleep substantially impact the quality of your life, leading to better concentration, more energy, increased productivity, and the ability to control your emotions and behaviour will also dramatically improve.

Increased hydration and water intake:

Did you know that when you drink alcohol, you can lose up to four times as much water as what you drank? The high loss of water is why drinking can leave us feeling incredibly dehydrated and cause headaches. Your organs will take water from the brain due to water loss within the body! All of a sudden, hangover headaches make sense.

When omitting alcohol, the extra hydration and water retention will increase energy and concentration. Alongside this, your moods can feel far more stable, and you won’t have to suffer from headaches in the first place!

MONEY AND CALORIES SAVED:

6 x 175ml glasses of wine = 900 calories!!

6 x pints of average strength lager = 1080 calories!!

It all adds up, even if you only have one glass a night.

Regardless of what brand of alcohol you choose, whether you’re a “cheapest is best” or “quality matters” kind of person – you will be saving a big weekly chunk of cash by omitting the drinking.

Keep going, and good luck!
